Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Spring is approaching and gardening magazines crowd mailboxes with enticing photos of sprouting seedlings and firm, ripe summer tomatoes. We shift ever so slightly from the relentless assault of the pandemic upon life, jobs, and human connection, to the possibility of what can be and the promise that the future holds.
What will we learn individually and collectively from this time? Will our instinct to escape pain drive us to frenzied planning for Fourth of July cookouts without a look back? Will we pause to remember those whose friends and family will not be at this year’s barbecue? Will we continue the generous outpouring of donations to food pantries and homeless shelters understanding that many remain unfed and unhoused?
The last year has altered so much and we are at an inflection point. Will we be able to resist the temptation to return to the “status quo” or will commit to equity, action, and compassion? The choice is ours to determine what the future will bring.
With warmest regards,
Cynthia B. Knox
