Community Hunger and Homelessness

Westchester County estimates that there are 200,000 food insecure residents, which is higher than any other county in the Hudson Valley. Among them, 1,750 individuals are experiencing homelessness. However, Peekskill can show leadership by helping our own. Our Fred’s Pantry program already helps 400 individuals each week with much needed food. Jan Peek House provides temporary shelter for a couple of dozen residents who would otherwise have no alternative other than the streets.

How To Help

Running through September 21st, the goal of Peekskill Summer Challenge is to further empower individuals and veterans in town experiencing homelessness to become independent once again, and ensure our town’s families have enough healthy, nutritious food. We invite you to participate in one or more of the following actions:
If you are a business or organization...

1. Display a poster in your place of business, affirming your commitment to the summer challenge

2. Host a donation box for nonperishable food items inside your place of business, or donate food or new clothing directly to CHHOP

3. Share your support through ready-made posts on your social channels

4. Participate in one-on-one mentoring and/or job training of our residents

5. Share the Peekskill Summer Challenge with local businesses and organizations. The Peekskill community contains hundreds of entities that care, but we need your help to reach them before our September 21st deadline. Here's a pre-made template you can use to invite them now.

6. Give a charitable contribution or provide a gift. Directions for donating to CHHOP can be found here. Our supporters have gotten really creative -- some have even provided gift certificates for our residents! If you have a unique gift idea, let us know at samantha@chhop.org.

Community Supporter Statements

“Hunger and homelessness in our community affect all of us. When our loved ones, veterans, and neighbors go hungry without a safe place to sleep at night, the strength of our families and our economy suffers. Fortunately, we hold the power to alleviate hunger and homelessness in Peekskill and one day across Westchester County. The Peekskill Summer Challenge offers an important opportunity for local businesses, faith leaders, and residents alike to take a stand against homelessness and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together,” said Cynthia Knox, CHHOP CEO.

“As a third generation Peekskill business owner, I understand firsthand how important it is that we come together to alleviate homelessness and hunger in our community,” said Charles J. (Chuck) Newman CLU, President of Charles Newman Co. on South St.  “I’m proud to partner with CHHOP for the Peekskill Summer Challenge and help bring us that much closer to ensuring everyone in Peekskill has access to the essential resources they need to thrive. It's a smart move for our local economy and also simply the right thing to do.”

"We all share a responsibility to look out for the most vulnerable among us and I am deeply grateful for all that CHHOP does to support those in our community who struggle with hunger and homelessness. Any of us could be one bad health scare or car accident away from living on the brink of homelessness. I am proud to join my neighbors in raising awareness about these important issues," said Pastor Carlos Figueroa of Peekskill Methodist Church.
